Lucid Air Electric Car VS Tesla Model S, who will win the competition? Lately, the name Tesla is synonymous with electric cars. The first generation Tesla roadster was launched back in 2008 and caused little surprise in the auto industry.
It turns out that it’s not just a proof of concept that a good electric car with great mileage due to fast acceleration is also worth it. It also proves that these cars are affordable. Tesla makes better cars with the Tesla Model S, Model X, Model 3, or Model Y.
The automaker still has many models under development, such as the ultra-fast second-generation Tesla roadster, the futuristic Cybertruck, and the semi-Tesla.
More companies and startups have jumped into the EV train and developed excellent cars like the Rivian with its very capable electric adventure pickup truck, the Rivian R1T SUV, and the R1S.
With its long-distance luxury sedans, Lucid Air is also developing its car and modular platform for new electric car models such as Volkswagen with its ID line.
One electric car that looks very promising is the Lucid Air electric car. But it is still expanding production, with deliveries expected to start in the spring of 2021.
The car looks like a legitimate Tesla killer if the announced specifications turn out to be true. We talk about interesting things that are happening in the EV industry. Tesla Model S or whatever is an easy choice for electric cars because they are readily available for purchase and have the best infotainment system.
Apart from that, the great supercharging network and other features make a case for buying a Tesla very easy. However, some of Lucid Air’s announced features are much bigger than the Tesla Model S has, at least on paper. Here’s how Lucid Air is better than the Tesla model.
The drivetrain of Lucid Air Electric Car
Lucid Air is ready to put the best in their presentation. You can see that their powertrain is one of the things they are most proud of. The drivetrains look objectively better than the Tesla Model S, at least on paper. Lucid comfortably outperforms even the fastest model S.
Lucid Air technology has managed to miniaturize the Lucid power train while increasing its efficiency. Not only that but simultaneously producing the highest power output per pound of the powertrain in the world today.
The Lucid Air front power unit brings together the motor transmission and inverter in one unit. Think of it as only one-third the size of the powertrain in the Tesla model S.It can fit in a school backpack and weighs only 163 pounds.
The powertrain unit can produce 670 hp so that the motor can spin up to 20,000 rpm. Lucid Air’s test numbers for dual-motor versions show that the Air can be 0-60 in 2.5 seconds, 10-second of quarter-mile sprints. The max speed is 320 km/h (electronically limited). Thus, these numbers place the Lucid among the fastest accelerating cars in the world.
The Lucid Airs battery pack will power single and dual motor options, powering all four wheels and producing 746 kilowatts.
Comparatively, the Tesla Model S cannot match that confusing statistic. The Tesla Model S hit 60 mph in 2.3 seconds beating the Air. But it only has a combined power output of around 580 kW. Meanwhile, the Lucid Air has an EPA-tested range: 517 miles to make it an important car for the EV market.
Not only does it beat the long-range version of the Tesla Model S plus, which has an official EPA rating range: 402 miles, but it also makes a winning case for those who don’t want to use an electric car due to range anxiety. The 2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class can cover 590 miles on a full fuel tank. So, in the best-case scenario, Lucid Air is almost on par with this range.
The Lucid Air achieves this range with the 113 kWh battery pack announced a few weeks ago, 15 kWh more than the 98 kWh battery pack in the Tesla Model S.
Meanwhile, the additional 14 come via efficiency improvements across the car’s design. Lucid says its battery set up is extra compact compared to the Model S.
Peter Rawlinson, who designed the Tesla Model S before establishing Lucid, said a tinier battery pack to give an extraordinary 350-mile range should still be available for a much lower price in 2022.
Now Lucid is in the launch phase. So anything is possible between now and then concerning the price and specifications they offer.
Lucid Air’s drag coefficient and efficiency are methodically and meticulously designed with efficiency as its core driving power. The design shows how Lucid Air can slide through Air, and this phenomenon is measured as the drag coefficient. Lucid claims that the Air has a drag coefficient of 0.21 to aid aerodynamic efficiency.
In comparison, the Tesla Model S has a claim of 0.24, and the Tesla Model 3 is claimed to be 0.23, and here smaller means better. If that claim turns out to be true, then the Lucid Air will be the slickest car in its category. The low drag coefficient helps the car achieve more reach with relatively less energy expenditure. Doing so will help Lucid achieve what they call a smart range beyond just adding battery capacity alone.
Smart range optimizes every aspect of the car to be as efficient as possible to reach more miles / kWh than competitors. We should note that different automakers use different methods of measuring drag. So it will be difficult to determine which vehicle is the sleekest.
Even though the Tesla Model S is a luxury electric car, it stands far from the Lucid Air in its luxurious interior design and materials. Lucid Air is a luxury car.
The interior has a unique two-tone design where the front of the vehicle is sportier and decorated with darker colored material. At the same time, the back is made into a more relaxed area made with lighter and brighter colors. This material offers a different comfort experience for the driver or passenger.
Front passengers get a darker color for riding, while those behind getting a lighter color for relaxation. The rear seats will be made in two variants, a launch edition bench seat, and an executive rear seat to be added sometime in the future. The executive seats can only accommodate two people and can be reclined 45 degrees to create Air lounge space. The interior design also takes the same minimalist approach as the Tesla Model S.
Lucid Air incorporates all the ingredients to make every space and surface feel luxurious, classy, and expensive materials, including bark, metal, etc. The Lucid Air has two large displays on the top of the dashboard, a 34-inch 5k curved display. Meanwhile, a second touch screen below the dashboard provides more detailed controls for infotainment and navigation.
The screen retracts back to the dashboard when not used. But it will open when you swipe the screen up and down.
We haven’t seen how the infotainment system in Air works, seeing that they set their sights on beating Tesla, likely to be as good as that at Tesla or better.
Not only does the bigger Lucid battery give it extra performance over the Model S, but the company has also confirmed that the Air will travel further between charges. Five hundred seventeen independently tested miles is the maximum combined range for the Air, the longest distance from any EV. Because the battery was bigger, Lucid had to develop technology to charge it faster.
Lucid Air has a 900V charging system that can charge at 300 kW DC to draw an energy range of 480 km in just 20 minutes. The fastest charging speed on the Tesla is 50 kW less with a maximum speed of 250 kW, which is accessed via the Tesla supercharger location.
The Tesla Model S can regain 80% of battery capacity in 30 minutes of charging time. The 900V system in Lucid Air is integrated into the so-called Lucid magic box, which includes a DC circuit for fast charging of up to 350 kW and can draw AC power from the battery.
To date, only Nissan H offers a factory-based bi-directional charging solution. Lucid provides AC bidirectional charging via the standard CCS connector used by everyone except Tesla to power other devices.
Lucid Air has already applied this system at its headquarters in California to allow peak shaving to reduce energy costs, but Tesla does not support bi-directional charging.
Lucid Air Electric Car Storage Area
At least for now, Elon Musk doesn’t seem to see the value of the storage. Lucid claims the front trunk is bigger than the combined Model S, Jaguar i-pace, Audi e-tron, and Mercedes EQS. Lucid proudly calls it the largest luggage ever made. It has a two-tiered storage style design, foldable cargo cover.
There is a large rear trunk with a 60/40 split rear seat that folds down. The double-deck cargo area can accommodate surfboards as high as 6ft 5 inches. The clamshell-style deck lid opens to reveal a generous two-level trunk while lifting the hood to present an incredibly large area, the largest in any electric car.
Inside the cabin, you will find several storage areas, including a large compartment behind the retractable pilot panel for front-seat passengers. Lucid can achieve this much storage space as a result of the miniaturization of its drivetrain components.
As we discussed earlier, the Model S’s futuristic exterior design is almost as common on roads. Lucid takes a futuristic approach to Lucid Air, and they made it look like a road concept vehicle with revolutionary headlamps, including thousands of light channels.
Air claimed they were brighter than other cars from the side profile. The shape of the floating roof stands out well with a touch of metallic silver pillars. The only design element that strikes our eyes is the rear hatch reminiscent of the rear doors of the Lincoln MKC.
Prices of Lucid Air Electric Car
So far, the Lucid Air stands out above the mediocre competitive price tag of the Tesla Model S. Lucid has yet to confirm the base price of Air. But they say it costs under $ 80,000 plus a $ 7,500 federal tax credit.
A well-equipped 620 hp touring Air costs $ 95,000 before the Air incentive, and a grand tourer costs $ 139,000. If you want the fastest Dream Limited Air Edition, it will cost $ 169,000. It ranges between $ 74,990 for the price of long-range and approx $ 94,990 for the cost of long-range plus.
The performance of the Model S undercuts Lucid Air slightly, even though the interior doesn’t feel premium. Meanwhile, Porsche ranges from $ 94,990 for the 4S to $ 185,000 for the Turbo, making it the most expensive of the three.
Lucid has finished his homework because the new Air could knock down a Tesla and a Porsche in one fell swoop on paper. These are just some of the better features of the Lucid Air once the car started shipping. We’ll be combing every inch to make this list longer than the Tesla Model S.
