2020 Toyota Yaris XLE Hatchback Is Affordable But Enjoyable To Drive

2020 Toyota Yaris XLE hatchback is here to show you that an entry-level car doesn’t have to be a poor suffering box.

Yaris would like you to understand that it punches well above its class. Let’s take a close look and see if we agree.

The 2020 US market Yaris XLE is the tiniest Toyota available in the states.

If the design style seems a bit un-Toyota like it’s because it is a rebadged Mazda 2, which is no longer marketed in the US.

Mazda’s are usually quite attractive, and this Yaris hatchback, at least from the side in the back, looks quite lovely and well proportioned.

Are you a big fan of the enormous angry grill? This design shows to be all automakers’ trend now. Someone must like it.

But if you’re looking to buy one of the most affordable autos sold in America, you seemingly aren’t too concerned with appearances. So the grill gets a pass.

We’re more excited about things like fuel saving. The RS gets 32 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway.

We’re interested in things like reliability, but it’s a Toyota, and it’s a Mazda, so it’s going to be OK!

2020 Toyota Yaris XLE Hatchback Price

So, what about the price? The XLE is the top-level trim, and it comes in at $18,750.

The base Yaris L sedan can be had for an insignificant $15,650. It’s inexpensive.

The XLE hatchback adds a few thousand dollars to the price, but it packs in a good deal of premium content.

Toyota Yaris XLE Hatchback Interior

One of the most impressive things about the 2020 Yaris is the interior because it’s got a great design and looks upscale.

You have some excellent fake leather seats, auto climate control, leather trim on the steering wheel, shift knob, and parking brake handle.

You do have tilt wheel heated mirrors, an excellent infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, push-button start, even a sport mode.

It is a cut above what you might expect from a cheap car.

Yes, there are certain areas where Toyota cut costs.

But we are unsure if a nicer looking or functioning interior is found in an inexpensive subcompact out there.

There are no gimmicks here; everything in Yaris looks good.

It’s easy to operate and makes sense.

Even in Yaris, auto climate control is a simple three-knob layout and can be used without even looking at it.

Simple but effective design and Toyota Yaris seats are great super comfortable.

What about the size? Yaris hatch is six inches longer than the previous Yaris hatchback.

It’s still a small car at 6 ft 3.
So, if you’re tall, there isn’t a whole lot of room to stretch out inside.

The backseat super tight for some people, but it would be sufficient for a quick trip.

For storage space in the hatch is 16 cubic feet. We think it’s acceptable but not best-in-class.

2020 Toyota Yaris has a naturally aspirated 1.5 liter 4-cylinder, 106 horsepower, which results in adequate acceleration, 0-60 is in just under 10 s.

So, it’s down on power compared to some of its competitors. But it doesn’t feel all that slow.

The car is lightweight and relatively agile. The transmission is quick to shift.

So if you love the slow car fast, then Yaris is a fun car to push a little bit but still stay within legal speeds.

You have a Sport mode that appears to adjust the throttle response and leaves the auto transmission to hold gears a little longer before shifting.

The manual mode at Rev matches is pretty neat for a Yaris.

However, it’s certainly a lot better when it comes to riding quality than you might expect for this class of vehicle.

The short wheelbase does allow for some front to rear bounce that you wouldn’t get with a larger vehicle. But that comes with the section of a smaller car.

In terms of driving experience, Toyota Yaris is much better than the subcompacts of the past.

There are a few elements that are a throwback. It’s easy to see out most new cars have terrible visibility.

But the 2020 Yaris is an exception to that new rule. It doesn’t continually beep at you if you’re not staying in your lane. Or if there’s a car next to you or behind you.

The RS has excellent basic safety features like low-speed automatic braking to identify obstacles, panic stop auto braking, and traction control.

So, that’s pretty much it back to the days when you had to be aware of your surroundings.

Toyota Yaris Competitors

You know if the Chevy Spark and the Nissan Versa are cheaper. But the Yaris comes with more standard features.

Do you think Honda Fit is a bit more powerful and has slightly more cargo space? Yes, but still, the 2020 Yaris gives you more standard features on the base model.

We understand if the Kia Rio is about a thousand dollars cheaper and a bit more powerful, but it has less content.

Yes, Mitsubishi Mirage is a couple thousand cheaper, but it’s unrefined, has less power and features.

You might also compare the Yaris hatchback to the Toyota Corolla hatchback.

The MSRP is nearly $3,000 more than the Yaris LE and about $2,000 more than Yaris XLE.

But it is a pretty good step-up in terms of power, features, cargo space, and it has nearly identical fuel economy.

But surprisingly, the Yaris has better backseats legroom!

Now, you might not have the extra cash to go to a Corolla.

So, what about a small crossover or subcompact car like the 2020 Toyota Yaris as a hot commodity? But crossovers are flying off dealer lots.

What if we compare Yaris to a much more expensive Toyota CHR, but it has worse gas mileage?

Surprisingly, the Yaris has more front shoulder room, headroom, and rear legroom.

It’s not even that far behind on storage space. Yes, the CHR is still more extensive but not by as much as you think.

Conclusion of Toyota Yaris 2020

The 2020 Yaris XLE has a better front grille and looks more dependable than the competitors.

The Yaris is undoubtedly more enjoyable to drive.

Yes, the price is relatively low, but it has the essence of the affordable cars that came before it.

The interior and solid driving dynamics’ quality makes you feel like you’re driving a more expensive car.

If you’re in a car dealership for an affordable subcompact car and want a reliable list of standard features but fun to drive, then the 2020 Toyota Yaris XLE hatchback should be at the top of your list.
