Today we’re going to talk about the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, and in the Mustang hierarchy, this is the one that sits at the very top.
We haven’t seen the Shelby GT500 in the lineup for about five years, and the previous generation was co-developed with Carroll Shelby himself.
But sadly, Carroll Shelby passed away in 2012, and this all-new version of Ford Performance was developed with high expectations in mind.
Over the past 55 years, the Ford Mustang has been an American icon that has consistently been in the Ford lineup.
When you have an iconic vehicle like the Ford Mustangs in your portfolio, fans will always demand more. We’ll want more power, better handling, and exclusivity.
GT500 Shelby Performance and Specs
The all-new 2020 GT500 Shelby and its specs are quite impressive.
760 horsepower from the new supercharged 5.2 liters V8, new Tremec design, 7-speed dual-clutch transmission replaces the old 6-speed manual.
Also, because this new version uses the s550 platform, it finally has an independent suspension. Ford has once again touched on to make this vehicle the most track-capable Mustang ever.
Ford says it’s not only the fastest Mustang they’ve ever built but also the best handling you can buy today.
So much history behind the name Shelby.
The big question we want to answer is whether this all-new 2020 version lives up to Carroll Shelby’s high expectations? So if you have a Mustang with the Shelby GT-500 badge on it, this is a huge story, which is what Ford Performance really focuses on.
It starts under the hood of this vehicle.
One thing that reminds you of this classic performance car is when you pulled the hood latch, but it didn’t really open.
There are two secondary locks that you have to push into both of them, which will literally open the car’s hood.
Once you do, it will reveal the machine’s beauty in a completely new design compared to the previous 2013 and 2014 models.
It’s a new 5.2 liter V8 that shares the block with the existing motor on the Shelby GT350, naturally aspirated.
Now a sizeable 2.65-liter supercharger is strapped to the top of this car. Ford says that they have also redesigned the inside and even made it a cross-plane crank.
So the flat-plane crank you get for the 350 has been changed to a more conventional one.
The impressive numbers are 760 HP, which is more than what you get in the Dodge Hellcat if you keep the score and a lot more than what you get on the Camaro Z11, and torque at 625 lb-ft.
If you had the previous generation, Shelby, you’d even notice that it’s about 100 HP more than you got in 2013, which had the 662.
Strangely enough, the old Shelby did have slightly more torque, which had 631 lb-ft compared to the 625.
Keep in mind that this is technically a smaller engine than the old Shelby, which had a 5.8 liter supercharged V8.
More great news for this new generation, the 6-speed manual has been discontinued.
It has been replaced by a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission built by Tremec Ford, which says that some things are similar to the Ford GT supercar, although we are not entirely sure as we believe it is a get Trac transmission.
So technically, it is a different supplier, and this vehicle is only a rear-wheel drive.
Some of you may be thinking about how this will put the power down to the promise they have? Remember, this is related to the actual suspension setup and tire width for this vehicle.
This is the most powerful and heaviest Mustang you will probably ever see, at around 40,235 pounds. Though maybe a hundred pounds lighter because of the carbon fiber track package.
So remember that you have to pay to play. The performance figures are impressive. Ford says 0-60 in 3.3 seconds, and you should do a quarter-mile around 10.7 seconds.
The top speed is limited to 180 mph. So once you’re tired of drooling about under the hood for this vehicle, when you look at the actual Shelby design, you can clearly say that Ford has given this thing its own unique look.
That’s important because Shelby clearly needs to stand out. It’s worth showing everyone on the roads that you have the wildest Mustang you can buy today.
Shelby Mustang GT500 Fuel Consumption
You’re gonna be paying a $2,600 gas guzzler tax because the consumption is rated at 12 in the city and 18 on the highway.
When you combine it with a 16-gallon gas tank, the computer only shows 200 miles on a full tank of fuel.

Now about the front fascia, as you can see on all the Shelby models, including the 350, Ford has retained a previously updated front, which was our choice because we thought it looked better than the refreshed model.
If you’re looking for full LED headlights, those aren’t available on the GT500, but you do have LED running lights.
You have to buy a xenon headlight, and then you have an incandescent turn signal. Ford says they are keeping the front of the older model because they say cooling is necessary.
It has about 50% more active cooling than the Shelby GT350. There are a total of six heat exchangers behind the grille, working behind the hood.
Ford has basically learned from some of its competitors and doesn’t want its engine to overheat on the track as has happened to some competitors we won’t mention here.
The front fascia is dominated by a Shelby snake in the center of the grill. Ford says that it is the most giant snake they have ever built in the Shelby GT350.
You can see the Shelby spelled out on the lower front fascia, just in case you forgot to buy this model. Overall we really like how it looks with its racing red exterior color, black accents, and a line of over-the-top vinyl hoods that cost around an extra $ 1000.
If you don’t like the tapes, you can pay the extra $ 10,000 to paint them, which sounds a little ridiculous.
But remember, it will be more expensive if you want the actual labor costs of painting the vehicle. The hood ventilation is pleasant because it helps cool the engine.
Also, there is a rain garden, so if things get wet, it won’t get an engine.
Another side profile of this vehicle, the big story about this car that is also available on the 350, is that you can get carbon fiber wheels.
That’s right, you’ve exposed 20-inch carbon fiber wheels, and with the track package, it looks fantastic, especially in the racing red color.
The track package has Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, 305 at the front and 315 at the rear.
So Ford has given this car some unique rubber because you’ve got 760 HP, so you have to put that power down.
You may also notice massive brakes. Ford says those are the most oversized brakes you can get on a production two-door car.
They measure 16.5 inches in diameter. In comparison, the Lamborghini, which had the most massive production brakes, had 17-inch rotors.
You’ve got a six-piston Brembo. So, you will have serious stopping power.
Unfortunately, Ford doesn’t offer carbon-ceramic brakes, which is a very attractive omission to us. But we’ll have to wait while we’re on track to see if that’s something they should add.
Obviously, with this generation of Mustang coming out in 2015, that dimension hasn’t changed.
You still have a 107-inch wheelbase, and the GT Shelby 500 is 2 inches longer than a regular Mustang, so the car is about 190 inches long.
If you are looking for a sunroof, it is not available, but you can have a roof painted black.
But the mirror isn’t coated in carbon fiber. It’s just painted black. Then on the back, you can see the wings.
You can get it as part of the back for $ 18,000. The carbon fiber package is that when you’re going at the triple-digit speed, it adds 550 pounds of downforce to the rear underneath this vehicle, essential for track riding.
Obviously, it makes the Mustang look fantastic when you look at the rear fascia. If you don’t opt for the track pack, you have a bit smaller wings.
We recommend at least doing this and getting vast wings. On the back, the design hasn’t changed much from the regular Mustang, although it has a giant snake in the middle.
You have the sync LED turn seal and then the exhaust system. Of course, tuned uniquely for this vehicle.
Many V8s sound really good in this vehicle segment, but we have to say the new GT500 sounds are impressive.
If you’re also wondering, the trunk capacity hasn’t really changed from the regular Mustang.
You get about 13 cubic feet of space, the seats that don’t seem to fold down, but you have a fair amount of room.
Be aware that the Dodge Challenger will definitely give you a little more room. There are no spare tires here, so you should either bring the triple-a or have it fixed.
While Carroll Shelby was absent during the development of this all-new model, after spending the day with the 2020 Shelby GT500, you can clearly see that the Ford Performance team really did it all.
Ford has presented a car that will truly make him proud of its excellent engine with a 7,500 rpm redline and a great exhaust sound.
The fast-shifting dual-clutch transmission will honestly make you forget a little about the manual because the old one wasn’t that great.
But that’s the whole package of this car, unlike the previous generation, which we thought was a little rough.
Ford has really made these new ones much smoother, but they haven’t taken away from the deep sense we know and love with Shelby.
2020 Ford Shelby GT500 is the most fantastic product because of the lower power for a rear-wheel-drive car with 760 horsepower.
It will relaunch time and time without scaring you off with the ability to give you the kind of AWD grip you expect from many modern electric cars today.
Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Price
However, with the Mustang’s charismatic sound and love, of course, this GT500 is not perfect.
We think the fuel tank is too small, the distance is only about 200 miles, and the interior needs to be a little more beautiful considering this vehicle’s price point.
Speaking of pricing, the new Shelby GT500 is available for a starting price of under $75,000 for the base model.
But you can opt for a costly $ 18,500 carbon fiber track package, $ 1,000 for the white racing stripe over the hood and roof, $ 500 for the strips, and $ 2,600 “gas guzzler tax.”
All of that makes it the most expensive Mustang Ford has ever produced.
We argue that with that amount of handling gives you the amount of performance, grip, and overall cohesiveness you get with the whole package.
Now it’s easily worth the money, and really many of you who might be considering this will likely cross-shop.
Not with your Hellcat
challenge but perhaps with something like a Porsche
as it handles, pushes, and accelerates with the same kind of character you expect.
