1962 Ferrari 250 GTO History and Model

The Ferrari 250 GTO is the advancement of the 250 SWB, and in 1962, the Omologato GT first appeared in public. During 1961 Bizzarrini developed it together with a small engineering team. At that time, they used parts from various then-current production cars and 500TR engines to build a single prototype. For the sake of making vehicles as SWB variants, they impose several restrictions as needed.

They built 39 units in which three of them had a 4-liter engine. Meanwhile, the second series made three cars with a completely new body in 1963. They also converted four vehicles in the first series as additional units.

Ferrari 250 GTO Engine and Performance

The engine capacity of 2953 cc V12 was standard with a single cam in each bank, an alloy block, two valves per cylinder, and heads and was fed by twin carburetors 6-Weber 38DCN. The engine was able to produce 290bhp @ 7,400rpm regardless of different results for different levels of racing trim. It was located more under, considering a dry-sump system, and further back compared to the SWB. A reality that qualified the 250 GTO to have a smaller nose and significantly better aerodynamic performance.

Apparently, for homologation purposes, the front used an independent wishbone setup suspension and maintained the live rear axle of the SWB.

250 GTO Championship racing achievements

In the world championships of 1962, 1963, and 1964 the Ferrari 250 GTO had made an extraordinary achievement by winning it. Many prestigious races were successfully conquered, such as:

  1. 1000 km of Nurburging in 1963 and 1964
  2. Targa Florio in the 63-64 period
  3. 1964 at the Tour de France
  4. 1962-1963 at Lemans 24 hours
  5. 63-64 at Sebring 12 hours
